Manufacturing of low cost Sanitary Pads- Krishnaveni is a 20 year old graduate, daughter of Shanti, who is in the housekeeping team of vaidyagrama. Krishnaveni is interested in empowering herself and also wants to support the village women by taking up some enterprise which is useful for the women folk. During one of the health talks it came about that the women in the villages suffer from hygiene associated gynecological problems due to water shortage. Every month during the summer months, due to shortage of water, they are unable to wash the cloth used for periods. This prompted us to think about manufacturing Sanitary pads for the village ladies.
Arunachalam Muruganantham is an Indian social entrepreneur who has given women from low income groups in India dignity, by making it possible for them to afford to buy sanitary towels and provide them with an income at the same time. He has devised a machine which costs INR 2.5 lakhs and the total cost of sanitary pad manufacturing project including working capital and all other costs INR 3.94 lakhs ( USD 6100) . This will also give employment to 6 ladies and more number of sales staff who will earn some commission from sales of sanitary pads in the villages and local schools.
The raw material used for making sanitary pads is wood pulp, and the machines would grind, de-fibrate, press and sterilize the pads under ultraviolet before packaging them for sale. The used sanitary pads are easily disposed by burying them in the soil and is eco-friendly.
Krishnaveni is interested in running the sanitary pad unit manufacturing sanitary pads, solely for the village women. This is a women empowerment program and hence Punarnava Trust is supporting Krishnaveni in realising her dream.
